Meditation for Mental Health

My meditation journey began when I was 28 years old (I’m now 47), where I found myself at ‘rock bottom’. I was lost, alone and totally confused about my purpose in life. I was relying upon substances to escape my everyday world and was horribly depressed. My mental health was at an all-time low.

A close friend was worried for my life and introduced me to a local meditation course so with nothing to lose and my mental state being as it was, I threw myself into it wholeheartedly, and the results spoke volumes.

Through my personal experience, the benefits of regular meditation include:

  • learn to become more compassionate
  • learn to be more present and ‘in the now’
  • learn how to relax the body and mind
  • learn to spend your time on the things and people that are important
  • become more focused and organised in your day-to-day routine
  • increased work productivity
  • increased motivation about life and health in general
  • noticeable increase in brain functioning more effectively
  • ability to distance yourself from issues or people which do not bring joy

My advice when it comes to meditation is that you will get out of it what you put in.  Do not expect to have massive transformations in mental health if you are just doing it once a fortnight for 10 minutes. Like anything, practice makes perfect, and commitment is rewarded with significant pay-offs.

For meditation resources on the go, there are some amazing phone apps like ‘headspace’ and ‘Calm’ which make it easy to access tools.
